Ecclesiastes (Sermon Series)

The saying, “The burned hand teaches best,” expresses a notion that seems obvious — experience is the best teacher. But is it? Have you ever known someone who repeatedly does the same dumb thing over and over and never learns a thing? Experience doesn’t teach, what we bring to our experiences determines what we get out of them.
But must we experience everything for ourselves to learn from experience? Is it possible to learn from the experiences of others? The wisdom literature of the Bible is predicated on the idea that it is. And who better to learn from than Solomon?
Solomon was wise, and he has much to teach us about life. But his wisdom is incomplete. The wisdom contained in Ecclesiastes prepares us for someone greater than Solomon, someone whose wisdom compliments and completes the wisdom of Ecclesiastes. As with the Law of Moses, the wisdom of Solomon finds its fulfillment in the Gospel of Christ.
